Thiruvananthapuram: State President MV Shreyams Kumar of the ruling LDF's ally Janata Party has been elected as a Rajya Sabha member from Kerala on Monday. The by-election was held for the Rajya Sabha seat after his father and media veteran MP Virendra Kumar died on May 28. Kerala Vidhan Sabha secretary and polling officer SV Unnikrishnan said Shreyams Kumar got a total of 88 votes, while Congress-led UDF candidate Lal Varghese Kalpakwadi got 41 votes. BJP MLA Rajagopal did not participate in the voting and PC George's vote has been invalid. Out of a total of 136, 130 members voted, while 6 were absent.

45 members of UDF present: Former CM VS Achuthanandan and George M. Thomas did not vote for the ruling LDF, while Roshi Agastin and N. from Kerala Congress Jose K. Mani faction from United Democratic Front (UDF) Jayaraj remained absent. CF Thomas, the leader of the Congress's Joseph faction did not vote. It has been learned that in the 140-member assembly, there are 93 members of LDF and 45 members of UDF.
