Bangalore: The Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) Bellary experienced a power outage that led to the deaths of three patients who were admitted to the ICU, and the Karnataka Health and Family Welfare Department has constituted a five-person team to look into the incident amid the ongoing political finger-pointing.

The Karnataka government promised Thursday that it will submit a report after conducting an investigation into the two deaths that occurred in the ICU ward of the Vijayanagara Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS), which it ruled out to be the result of a power breakdown.

At the VIMS Hospital in Bellary, two patients in the ICU unit dead on Wednesday as a result of a power outage. The patients' families and opposition parties claim that the nearly three-hour power outage was to blame for the fatalities, despite the hospital and district officials attributing them to medical issues.

The Leader of the Opposition, Siddaramaiah, brought up the issue in the Assembly and blamed the government's carelessness for the patients' deaths. "Between 8 and 10.30 in the morning, there was a power outage, and the generator was not working. Because there was no generator or power source, the ICU patients died. The ventilator was not functioning as a result "He made this statement while directly accusing the district and state governments.
The ICU deaths were not caused by a power outage, said Ballari District Minister B. Sriramulu, who noted that the hospital has a combined UPS and generator power backup of three hours.

"Moula Hussain, 35, a patient with kidney troubles, was taken to the intensive care unit on September 11 at 9.30 a.m. He later passed away on September 14. Chittemma, 30, was admitted for treatment after a snake bite, but the poison had already spread throughout her body and she was unable to be saved. These two deaths weren't caused by a power outage, "added Sriramulu. He emphasised that the medical superintendent's report reached a similar conclusion.

Siddaramaiah requested that there be an investigation into the fatalities and that the victims' families receive compensation.
