Archana Mahanta, the mother of famous singer Papon, died in Guwahati on Thursday. He had a brain stroke on 14 July last, after which he was undergoing treatment. She was 72 years old. The same Archana Mahanta herself was a well-known folk singer of Assam.

She was admitted to the hospital for the past one and a half months. She was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the city. Archana was already suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure and Parkinson's. Her condition was getting worse after the brain stroke. Her situation was not improving.

On the same Archana's death, Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal mourned, writing: 'Today, after the death of Archana Mahanta, we have lost a shining artist among the cultural giants of the state. I wish his soul peace. We request all his well wishers and loved ones to pray for his soul. With this, the country has lost another great artist. But they will always live in our memories, may God give peace to their souls. After his death, the atmosphere of mourning has enveloped his house.
