New Delhi: Dalit youth Lakhbir Singh was brutally murdered on October 15, 2021, at the Singhu-Kundli border. The Nihang Sikhs have been accused of killing him. Sarabjit Singh is among the arrested persons in the case. Reports said that the arrest in the case was confessed to the court by other Nihang Narayan Singh, Bhagwant Singh and Govind Preet Singh before the court on October 17. Narayan Singh had said in the court that he had cut his leg, Sarabjit had cut the paw of his hand and Govind Singh and Bhagwant Singh had hanged Lakhbir on the barricading. Nihang Sarabjit was first arrested in the case.

Now, media quoting a senior Punjab Police official said that Sarabjit had contact with Lakhbir. The two already knew each other. Sarabjit is said to have visited Cheema Kalan, a village in Tarantaran, Punjab. The report has raised the possibility that it was Sarabjit who brought Lakhbir to the venue. Haryana Police is investigating the murder. Several farmer leaders have said that there is a conspiracy to defame the movement behind the incident. Thereafter, the Punjab Government has now constituted an SIT. The head of the SIT constituted by the Punjab government is ADGP Varinder Kumar. Earlier, the family members of the deceased Lakhbir had also said that he had no money to go to the Singhu border. Some unknown people had taken him there. The family members had objected to allegations that Lakhbir had insulted the scriptures. According to him, Lakhbir was a religious man and used to go to Gurudwara twice every day. He could not insult any religion.

According to a police official, the accused Nihang Sarabjit had moved with his maternal uncle to Khujala in his village Gurdaspur at the age of 6. Sarabjit had passed Class 10 and moved to Dubai. He stayed there for 5 years. Meanwhile, Sarabjit's maternal uncle had come to live in the Sukhmani colony in Batala. Sarabjit returned from Dubai and moved in with his uncle again. Sarabjit was also married in 2007. But he got divorced in 2017 after 10 years. In 2017, Sarabjit reached Huzur Sahib in Nanded and completed the same formalities and became Nihang.
