According to a security source, six militants from the extremist Islamic State (IS) organisation were killed in an airstrike in Iraq's eastern province of Diyala on Saturday, including an IS local leader.

Iraqi warplanes carried out an attack on an IS location in the Udheim region of Diyala province, based on intelligence reports, according to media sources quoting Iraqi army Colonel Ehab Mohammed. According to Mohammed, six IS members were killed in the bombing, including a local IS senior.

Despite numerous military efforts to hunt them down, the regions that the IS terrorists previously held have witnessed their intense activity in recent months. Since Iraqi forces defeated ISIS in 2017, the security situation in the country has improved. IS remnants, on the other hand, have disappeared into metropolitan centres, deserts, and rugged terrain, waging guerrilla strikes against security personnel and civilians on a regular basis.
