Taliban: 7 Indian engineers were kidnapped in Afghan in May 2018. The Foreign Department said in a brief statement that 2 of those 7 hostages have been released on July 31 and have been taken back to the country. The number of hostages released in this way has been 6. Now only one Indian citizen is in the possession of Taliban.

According to the information received, in May 2018, 7 Indian and their Afghan driver were kidnapped by a Taliban faction when they are working on the power projects run by the government of Afghanistan. All these kidnappings are being done from North Baglan province. One of these hostages was freed in March 2019. While the other 3 were released from Bagram jail in October 2019. It was released only after liberating 11 Taliban militants from the occupation of the US Army. There is currently no information about the status of the lone member of the group. The State Department of India has thanked the Islamic Republic of the Afghan Government for the liberation of India.

In 2006, two Indian citizens who were kidnapped in Bagalan have been released after 2 years in jail. Along with the released men, there were four other Indians, who are working on the power transmission project.
