BAGHDAD: The US military said six Katyusha rockets targeted a military airbase in Iraq's western region of Anbar on Wednesday, which housed some US experts and organisations. On the condition of anonymity, an Iraqi army source informed that the strike took place in the evening, when rockets landed at Ayn al-Asad Airbase without knowing the number of victims.

The rockets were launched from a town 15 kilometres east of the airbase, according to the source, who also stated that no group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

Earlier in the day, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi branded the attacks on Iraqi military posts "absurd," emphasising that the US-led coalition forces' combat role in Iraq will come to an end once they leave the country.

"Unfortunately, there have been some ludicrous activities in the opening days of the new year, with many strikes targeting Iraqi bases, which will undoubtedly disrupt the country's security and stability," al-media Kadhimi's office said in a statement.

The current attack was part of a series of drone and rocket operations over the previous three days that targeted Iraqi army stations in Ayn al-Asad Airbase and Camp Victory near Baghdad International Airport, both of which house US advisers and agencies.
