An ongoing study trial showed results that a skin patch for treating peanut allergy is safe and effective for treatment in young children and young adults. The patch delivers small amount of peanut protein into the skin.

Peanut allergy is a kind of food allergy where the immune system of a person who is allergic to peanuts overreacts to a particular protein in the food.

Food allergy and food intolerance are different though the symptoms are similar. A food allergy can be life-threatening and those who have a food allergy should be careful to stay away from the foods that trigger it.

Peanuts are known to be one of the top foods that trigger a food allergy in children. It is a growing health concern and estimates suggest that 1-3 percent of children in westernized countries suffer from food allergy conditions.

Health experts would advice young children with an allergy to stay free of peanuts and to avoid it totally. However, experts have issued interim guidance on early peanut introduction and the prevention of peanut allergy in high-risk infants.

Recent research shows that feeding peanuts and eggs to infants lowers the risk of them developing allergies to these foods later on.

"The high adherence to the daily peanut patch regimen suggests that the patch is easy-to-use, convenient and safe. The results of this study support further investigation of epicutaneous immunotherapy as a novel approach for peanut allergy treatment." said, Co-author Dr. Marshall Plaut
