In a first-of-its-kind study, researchers have claimed that people who are suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) of lung disease may also be at high risk of coronavirus (Kovid-19) if they smoke. Smoky COPD patients have high levels of an enzyme, which can facilitate the entry of corona into the lungs.

An earlier study has shown that angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE-2) resides on the surface of lung cells. It serves as the entry point for the corona. The virus enters the cells and causes infection. According to a new study published in European media reports, lower levels of ACE-2 were found in people who quit cigarettes compared to smokers in the current era.
