Bamako: In an intricate geopolitical maneuver, Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso jointly issued a pivotal statement on Thursday, divulging that Niger has extended authorization to the armed forces of its neighbors, Mali and Burkina Faso, to intervene on its soil in the face of potential attacks.

This audacious move raises questions about Niger's political course and its determination to resist external pressure for leadership change.

The West African bloc ECOWAS, recognized for its regional influence, has been diligently engaged in negotiations with the junta in Niger, advocating for a transition towards constitutional governance.

However, an undercurrent of tension has emerged as ECOWAS issued a veiled warning, outlining its readiness to deploy troops into Niger should negotiations falter, with the intent to reinstate constitutional order.

The implications of such an escalation are multifaceted, laden with the potential to exacerbate the prevailing instability within the insurgency-stricken region.

This is particularly true given the resolute solidarity voiced by Niger's neighboring nations, Mali and Burkina Faso, who have affirmed their support for Niger in the event of any adversarial confrontation with ECOWAS.

The foreign ministers of the three aligned countries convened in Niamey, the capital of Niger, to convene on matters of collective security and shared concerns.

The joint statement issued thereafter commended General Abdourahamane Tiani, the junta leader in Niger, for his endorsement of two pivotal orders.

These orders, signed on Thursday, empower the Defense and Security Forces of Mali and Burkina Faso to intervene on Nigerien territory in the event of an external assault.

While this action reflects an assertive stance by the junta, the statement also highlighted the firm rejection by the Burkinabe and Malian ministers of any armed intervention against Niger's populace, stating that such a move would be tantamount to a declaration of war.
