NEW DELHI: Congress president Sonia Gandhi may not appear before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday since she has not tested Covid-19 negative. She has requested more time from the agency.
Sonia had tested positive for Covid on June 2 after being called by the ED in a case involving the National Herald newspaper.

Rahul Gandhi, her son and former party chief, has been summoned to appear before the law enforcement agency on June 13 after requesting an earlier date for an exemption.

On June 8, the ED invited the Gandhis to join in a money-laundering probe involving the National Herald newspaper and record their comments.  Several Congress officials, including the Gandhis, have been charged with misappropriating cash from the National Herald.

"This is a politics of vendetta and revenge by the BJP to target opposition leaders as they have done to other opponents in the country," Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala said of the ED summons.

"The National Herald was founded in 1942. The British attempted to close it at the time, and the Modi government is now following the same things. This is why the ED is now being employed..." The case was ended in 2015because there was no money involved,  Congress sources say.
