New Delhi: There was uproar in Parliament on Thursday (July 28) over a remark made outside the House by Congress leader in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on President Draupadi Murmu. The BJP, meanwhile, termed the opposition party as "anti-tribal and anti-poor" and demanded an apology from the party's working president Sonia Gandhi. Speaking to the media outside Parliament on the insult to the President, Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi said, "Adhir Ranjan has already apologised.'' However, Sonia did not make any statement on the issue inside Parliament.   

At the same time, Sonia Gandhi called a meeting of senior party leaders at the CPP office. Party leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury have also been asked to attend the meeting. At the same time, the Lok Sabha has been adjourned till 12 noon amidst a huge uproar. According to information received from sources, Sonia Gandhi has asked Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury to make a statement in the Lok Sabha on the issue. After this, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has written a letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker asking him to give him a chance to present his stand in the Lok Sabha on his statement on the President.

Earlier, when the Lok Sabha assembled at 11 am, Union Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani raised the issue, saying that the leader of the Congress in the House, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, insulted the country's first woman tribal President Draupadi Murmu by calling her the "Rashtrapatni." Irani has said that Draupadi Murmu, who has the country's highest constitutional post, was insulted by Chowdhury.
