NEW DELHI:  Budget carrier  SpiceJet announced on Monday that 90 barred pilots will undergo retraining after the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) imposed a fine on the company of Rs 10 lakh.

SpiceJet was recently penalised by the domestic aviation regulator for training pilots on malfunctioning simulators. The DGCA had restricted 90 SpiceJet pilots from flying Boeing 737 Max planes, and those pilots had to undergo 737 Max simulator training.  "For the time being, we have restricted these pilots from flying Max," DGCA Director-General Arun Kumar said in a statement. "They must satisfactorily retrain for flying Max."   "We will also take severe measures against the person proven to be culpable for the lapse." The airline currently has 650 pilots that have been trained to fly the 737 Max.

According to the DGCA's recommendation, SpiceJet has barred these 90 pilots from flying MAX aircraft till they complete re-training to the satisfaction of the regulator, SpiceJet said in a regulatory filing to the stock exchanges.
"This restriction has no bearing on MAX aircraft operations, and the firm has sufficient trained pilots available for its operations." These 90 pilots will be re-trained based on the findings of the DGCA. According to the submission, the DGCA issued a penalty of Rs 10 lakh based on its audit findings.
