Rameswaram fishermen have accused the Sri Lankan navy of chasing them while fishing near Kachchativu. Fishermen are tormented that the nets have been damaged. Fishermen claim that 50 boats had to return after Sri Lankan Navy patrol boats surrounded them and threatened them.

The rest, who were fishing in their traditional fishing area, allege that the Sri Lankan Navy personnel cut off their nets, threw bottles at them and ordered the fishermen to return home. This has resulted in severe losses for the fishing party, whose livelihood depends on their daily catch.

The fishermen stated that they are already suffering a lot because of the unabated hike in the price of diesel. As a result, they had to increase the price of their catch, which in turn has made people reluctant to buy fish. Amidst these lean times, they are constantly harassed by the Sri Lankan Navy.

Dominic, a fisherman who went fishing on Saturday, claimed that his team returned empty handed.

"We have nearly 800 boats here but due to high diesel prices, not many could go. The price of diesel is touching Rs 100 and might even surpass it. Our boats need 700 litres to run. But once we reach the fishing spot, we are being chased away by Lankan Navy and most of our diesel is spent avoiding them. Their Navy threw stones at us and cut off our nets. We have faced total loss,” said Dominic.
