Let us tell you that Arumugam Thondaman was the leader and minister of the Tea Garden Association, in which a large number of people flocked to pay his last farewell. Thondaman, 55, died of a heart attack on Tuesday and was to be cremated on Sunday in Nuwara Eliya. Authorities imposed a 24-hour curfew in an unsuccessful attempt to prevent the mob from reaching the body of Thondaman. A group of government doctors warned that 'these funerals may reduce the public's confidence in the measures taken so far to prevent the spread of the virus and cause another outbreak'.

At a time when health officials have advised only family members to attend the funeral, the doctors have expressed their displeasure over the public farewell of Thondaman. A police officer in the area says that it has become difficult to control the crowd. The supporters of the minister also tried to break the police barrier to enter a building for his last visit.
