Srinagar: The mayor of J&K's Srinagar municipal corporation (SMC), Junaid Azim Mattu, announced on Tuesday that a month of celebrations will be held to commemorate Srinagar's UNESCO designation as a creative city.
The mayor told the media that it was the most important day for the entire Srinagar district. Mattu stated that everyone involved has made significant efforts to ensure that Srinagar reaches this milestone.
"After a lot of hard work and dedication, we've reached this milestone. We've been working on this since 2018, and after a lot of hard work and dedication from the SMC Commissioner and other officers involved, we've finally reached the goal. It is Srinagar's most important day ", Mattu explained.
Srinagar was named a creative city by UNESCO on Monday for its craft and folk art. In the end, Srinagar had to compete with Gwalior for a spot on the UNESCO list this year. The J&K chapter of INTACH (Indian National Trust for Culture and Heritage) prepared the Dossier for Srinagar's claim with the help of other concerned agencies. The effort to get Srinagar recognised by UNESCO began four years ago, according to Saleem Beg, convener of the J&K chapter of INTACH.
