LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) along with UP forest department have seized ambergris (a solid waxy substance originating in the intestine of the whale) worth Rs 10 crore and detained four persons in connection.
STF sleuths pretended to be clients and asked the alleged defendant to bring products at their doorstep. In a statement, the STF said that Firoz Ahmad, Danish Akhtar, Avanish Kharwar, and Abhay Kharwar were arrested from Janeshwar Mishra park. They were involved in the smuggling of ambergris which is prohibited under the Wildlife Act of 1972.
STF said that 1 kg of ambergris costs Rs 2 crore on the worldwide market. The accused were found to be in possession of 4.2 kg. ASP, STF, Vishal Vikram Singh, the suspect disclosed during questioning that a Mumbai resident named Tufael had urged Firoz of Pratapgarh to sell ambergris that he had discovered on the shore. "Firoz roped in his friends which include Danish Akhtar, Avanish Kharwar and Abhay Kharwar," said Singh.
On social media, Firoz posted an advertisement about the same thing with the hashtag "High-end SUV."
The STF said that they were alerted by the Wildlife Crime Control Bureauabout this suspicious advertisement. Code phrases like double engine, scooter, four-wheeler, pipe, aaloo (potato), pyaaz (onion), dhariwala chaddar, and chhota dhariwala chaddar are commonly used when selling animals or their skin online.
The seller was from Pratapgarh, therefore WCCB informed them and the forest department about the trade, according to an officer.
"In cooperation with the STF, we set a trap and pretended to be a Middle Eastern-based perfume company while requesting that they meet us with a sample in Janeshwar Mishra Park. Danish, one of the accused, arrived with a little sample and was detained "DFO for Lucknow, Ravi Kumar Singh, said.
After he was taken into custody, someone called to say that the trade was completed, and everyone else with the consignment was urged to come to take part in the transaction. Although it's more frequently referred to as whale vomit, the term "ambergris" is derived from the old French terms "amber" and "gris," which signify "grey amber."
The substance, which is frequently found floating in the water or washing up on coastlines, is produced when the bile duct in the intestines of sperm whales secretes bile.
Ambergris can be found in the stomachs of dead sperm whales. The capacity of ambergris to "fix" a scent on a person's skin makes it a desirable fixative in the perfume industry.
