Sudan's Prime Minister announces his resignation amid political impasse

Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok announced his retirement on Sunday amid political gridlock and large pro-democracy protests in the aftermath of a military coup that stymied the country's delicate democratic transition.

Mr. Hamdok asked for a meeting to agree on a "national charter" and "create a roadmap" for the transition to be completed. Sudan's preparations to transition to democracy had been thrown off by the October coup, which came after a popular revolt drove the military to depose longstanding ruler Omar al-Bashir and his Islamist administration in April 2019.

Sudanese security forces brutally dispersed pro-democracy protestors on Sunday, prior to his resignation, in the latest demonstrations to criticise the coup and a subsequent settlement that reinstated the prime minister but marginalised the pro-democracy movement. At least two people were killed, according to a medical group.

One of the dead was hit "violently" in the head while participating in a protest march in Khartoum, according to the Sudan Doctors Committee, which is part of the pro-democracy movement. The second was shot in the chest in Omdurman, Khartoum's twin city, according to the report. Hundreds of protestors were hurt, according to the group.

Security personnel fired tear gas and sound grenades to disperse demonstrators, according to activist Nazim Sirag, and chased them into side streets across the capital. Protests were also held in other places in the Darfur region, including Port Sudan and Nyala.
