The religious ceremony was organized by More Grace International Ministries under the leadership of Abraham Kromah. The stampede allegedly took place when some criminals and goons from the area attacked the worshipers with axes and other deadly weapons at the crowded function. Thereafter, people started running away from the spot, which led to a stampede. The dead included 17 women, 11 children and three men.
