Former coach of Indian football team Sukhwinder Singh said that Sunil Chhetri was not his first choice and he had doubts about the current captain of the team. Speaking to AIFF.com, Sukhwinder said, "Baichung Bhutia was not available for the match. It was like a nightmare for me. At that time we were in Pakistan and I knew that the pressure would be too much. I want a smart and sharp player."

Chhetri made his international debut against Pakistan in 2005. On June 12, Chhetri will complete his 15 years at the international level. As Sukhwinder said, "To be honest, Chhetri was not on my mind at all. He was not my first choice. I looked around and wondered who would fill the empty space. Then I thought about him but I was sceptical about him."

According to reports, the former coach said, "I was thinking that he is short and how he will play in front of physically strong defenders at the international level. But I knew him because he played under my coaching at JCT. There he told what he can do. So I listened to my inner voice and gave him a chance. He did not disappoint me. "
