New Delhi: The Supreme Court  ON Wednesday granted anticipatory bail to Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader SK Supiyan, who served as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's election agent in Nandigram.

The court granted his request for anticipatory bail, subject to a number of conditions. The Supreme Court was hearing Supiyan's appeal, which was filed in response to a Calcutta High Court judgement rejecting his anticipatory bail plea.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed an affidavit opposing Supiyan's plea and urging the court to dismiss his petition for relief, claiming that there are compelling reasons to justify the petitioner's arrest and detention in order to uncover a larger conspiracy of planned political rioting and revenge.

"There are convincing reasons to justify the detention of the petitioner and his custodial interrogation to discover a deeper and larger conspiracy of premeditated political riots and retaliation," the CBI stated in a reply filed in opposition to Supiyan's plea.  “I told the Supreme Court that the magnitude of the crimes for which Supiyan alias Suffian is being probed, as well as the motive and intention with which such horrific crimes were planned and carried out by the petitioner, do not entitle him to seek relief at this time”.
