New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday granted bail to Kerala-based journalist Siddique Kappan, who is lodged in a jail in Uttar Pradesh. The UP government had registered a case against Siddiqui under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). The apex court has directed that Kappan be produced before a three-day defacement lower court and released on bail.
Kappan, a journalist from Kerala, was arrested in October 2020 while on his way to Hathras in Uttar Pradesh, where a Dalit woman died after being allegedly gang-raped. Kappan had approached the Supreme Court seeking bail in the case. Earlier this month, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court had rejected Kappan's bail plea.
Let me tell you that the bail plea of Kerala journalist Siddique Kappan in the apex court was fiercely opposed by the Uttar Pradesh government. The UP government had said that Kappan has close links with the Islamic extremist outfit Popular Front of India (PFI), which has an anti-national agenda. Siddique Kappan is part of a larger conspiracy to spread religious hatred and terrorism in the country.
