New Delhi: Justice R Bhanumathi, who sentenced four convicts to death in the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case, is going to retire on July 29 as a Supreme Court judge. Earlier on Friday, she said that she and her family have also suffered due to difficult legal procedures and delays. Due to which she could not get compensation after her father's death in a bus accident.

Justice Bhanumathi conducted the court proceedings for the last time on Friday. She said in her farewell address that her three-decade career as a judge, from the Lower Court to the Supreme Court, was unnecessarily disrupting. Attorney General KK Venugopal termed Judge Bhanumati as an outstanding judge. She will always be remembered for the historic verdict in the Nirbhaya case, in which she sentenced the four convicts to death.

A webinar was organized to honour Justice Bhanumathi's three-decade career as a judge, in which she recounted road accidents with her father and delays in compensation. She said, "I lost my father in a bus accident. When I was just two years old. In those days we had to file a case for compensation. My mother filed a lawsuit and the court issued the order. But, we could not get the money due to complicated procedures."
