Shimla: Six Congress legislators in Himachal Pradesh, who faced disqualification for their involvement in cross-voting during the recent Rajya Sabha polls, have taken their case to the Supreme Court, seeking to challenge the decision made by the state Legislative Assembly Speaker, Kuldeep Singh Pathania, on February 29.

The disqualification stems from their deviation from the party line during the Rajya Sabha polls, where they sided with the BJP nominee instead of supporting the Congress candidate. This breach of party discipline was further evident when these MLAs abstained from voting on the Budget, despite a clear directive from the Congress leadership.

Consequently, the ruling Congress party sought the disqualification of these legislators, citing their defiance of the party whip. This move resulted in the disqualification of Rajinder Rana, Sudhir Sharma, Inder Dutt Lakhanpal, Devinder Kumar Bhutoo, Ravi Thakur, and Chetanya Sharma from the state Legislative Assembly.

With the disqualification of these six MLAs, the effective strength of the House has been reduced from 68 to 62 seats. Additionally, the Congress party's representation in the assembly has shrunk from 40 to 34 members, altering the political dynamics within the state legislature.
