SC postpone hearing on petition for renaming country's name from India to Bharat

New Delhi: The hearing was adjourned on Tuesday on a petition filed in the apex court for addressing the country's name with 'Bharat' instead of 'India'. The apex court has deferred hearing on the petition without giving the next date. The petition was to be heard before a bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) SA Bobde, but it was adjourned as CJI Bobde was on leave on Tuesday. Earlier on Friday, the hearing was adjourned till June 2.

A petition was filed in the apex court recently, in which it was demanded that the country should not be named India but India or Hindustan. For this, the court should direct the central government to amend the constitution. The petition was accepted by the apex court. The petition claimed that the words Bharat or Hindustan evoke a sense of pride towards our nationality. The petition urges the court to direct the government to take the appropriate steps to amend Article 1 of the Constitution by removing the word India, calling the country as Bharat or Hindustan. This article is related to the name of this republic. While filing this petition a resident of Delhi has claimed that this amendment will ensure the liberation of the citizens of this nation from the colonial past.

The petition cited the discussion on Article 1 of the then draft of the Constitution in the Constituent Assembly in 1948, stating that at that time it was strongly advocated to name the country as Bharat or Hindustan. According to the petition, though it may be symbolic to change the English name, but replacing it with the word Bharat will justify the freedom struggle of our ancestors. The petition said that it is high time that the country is known by its original and authentic name.
