New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday refused to hear a petition challenging the Madras High Court's decision on the issue of forced conversion. The Supreme Court has said that this is being made more of a publicity interest litigation and there is a danger of disturbing religious harmony with such petitions. The bench of Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice AS Bopanna of the Supreme Court has told the petitioner that he is also engaged in doing such a petition only to disturb the harmony.

The bench has said that this petition is going to be dismissed with a cost. However, on this the petitioner's lawyer CR Jaya Sukin has said that she herself wants to withdraw the petition. Later, the court, while canceling the hearing on this petition, has accepted the demand to withdraw it. The petitioner had challenged the decision of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on a PIL in March last year.

In fact, an appeal was made to the High Court to issue an order to the Center and the Tamil Nadu government to constitute a board to stop and monitor the forced conversions being carried out by Christian missionaries. On this case, while pronouncing the order, the High Court said that the Tamil Nadu government already has a law to prevent forced conversion. Through which apart from forcible conversion, there is also protection against wrongful conversion. The High Court had also said that we can only hope and trust that the official responding in this case is law-abiding. The respondent (government) of the petition can also make rules regarding this if he wants. With this, the court has disposed of the writ petition in the matter.
