New Delhi: The Supreme Court will hear on July 16 on petitions filed against 10% reservation to the poorer sections of the general category. It will determine on that day whether an interim stay is necessary. The petitions say that reservation on economic grounds is unconstitutional. The apex court had decided to restrict the reservation to 50%, which has been violated.

It may be mentioned that in the last hearing, the Supreme Court refused to stay the 10 per cent reservation law. The court had said that the next hearing will brainstorm on whether to ban the 124th Constitution. Earlier, the court had refused to stay the law or order the matter to be referred to a larger bench. The court had issued a notice to the Centre asking it to respond. In fact, the petition has challenged the 124th Constitutional Amendment in the top court.

The petition was filed on behalf of Youth for Equality and Advocate Kaushal Kant Mishra and others. According to them, the basis of reservation cannot be economic. According to the petition, the Bill is against the basic principle of reservation of the Constitution, which violates the limit of 50% while giving 10% reservation to the general category. The bill provides 10 per cent reservation to the upper castes in government jobs and educational institutions.
