Dubai: When Virat Kohli wasn't reprimanding internet critics of Mohammed Shami on Saturday, he talked about how eager his squad was to get back on the field. Since calculating that the break following the Pakistan game comes at a decent moment for a squad that's had players coming in after a long season away from home ending in an intensive round of the IPL, the atmosphere has altered in a week. After a disappointing start to the World Cup in the shape of a 10-wicket defeat, India would have had a chance to study the possible threat that stands in their way to the semifinals while sitting indoors and practising for the previous six days.

India and New Zealand's defeat to Pakistan, where they were both on the wrong side of the toss, was accentuated by lacklustre performances with the bat and a fired-up bowling attack that presently seems to be the best-equipped in the competition. Even as Trent Boult intends to swing it like Shaheen against India's right-handed top-order, the game between these two stumbling sides on Sunday might come down to how effectively the team batting first starts.

There's also the tiny matter of India's ICC losing streak. They were part of a historic game on October 24, in which Pakistan broke their duck and won their first-ever World Cup match against their neighbours at the 13th try. While India does not need to break their duck, there is an opportunity to change history and end New Zealand's utter dominance in ICC events - an equation that currently stands at 7-1 in New Zealand's favour, including the final of the Champions Trophy in 2000 and, more recently, the semifinal of the 50-over World Cup in 2019 and the first-ever WTC final earlier this year.

T20I Head to Head: India 8-8 New Zealand. In both previous T20 World Cup encounters with India, New Zealand has emerged victorious. Following the 2016 T20 World Cup, India has won all eight of their T20Is against New Zealand.
