The Ministry stated that two People's Liberation Army (PLA) planes crossed the median line in the southwest part of Taiwan's air defense zone.

In response, Taiwan dispatched planes and ships and set up missile systems along the coast to monitor PLA movements.
The increased activity in the Taiwan Strait comes amid rising tensions between Taiwan and China. China claims Taiwan as its own territory and has talked about reunification by force.

On May 12, Taiwan's Defense Ministry reported 11 Chinese military planes and eight naval ships around Taiwan from 6 am Saturday to 6 am Sunday.
Taiwan's Defense Ministry said eight of the Chinese planes crossed the median line and entered Taiwan's Southwest Air Defense Zone. Taiwan responded by sending planes, ships, and missiles.

The Defense Ministry has been reporting on Chinese military activities for years, including identifying Chinese aircraft and drones crossing the median line.

The median line has been a sort of unofficial border between China and Taiwan, but China has increased its military activities since Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan in August 2022.

This month, Taiwan has tracked Chinese military planes 126 times and naval ships 62 times. Since September 2020, China has been stepping up its military presence around Taiwan using grey zone tactics, which involve achieving security goals without using direct force.
