The Taliban has announced a new diktat that men would not be allowed to teach women students in Afghanistan from now on, after announcing a ban on co-education. According to media reports, Taliban officials in Afghanistan's western Herat province ruled last week that girls at colleges would no longer be permitted to sit in the same classrooms as guys.
Officials from the Taliban have stated that there is no other reason for maintaining co-education and that it must be stopped. This comes only one day after Shaikh Abdulbaqi Haqqani was named Afghanistan's interim minister of higher education. The newly appointed education minister has said that education activities will take place according to Sharia Law. Many people have decried this move, which is set to deprive girls of higher education as major universities in the country cannot afford to provide different classes due to a dearth of resources.
“Taliban officially announce a ban on coeducation. ‘Men not allowed to teach girls,’ Taliban Higher Education Minister says, This will effectively deprive girls of higher education because universities cannot afford it nor there are enough human resources,” Afghan journalist Bashir Ahmad Gwakh said in a Twitter posting.
Media reports that Taliban higher education minister Baqi Haqqani added during his speech at Loya Jirga Tent that Sharia Law would govern all education in the country.
