Controversy in Afghanistan too regarding Hijab

Kabul: On the one hand, Muslim women in India are protesting against the wearing of the hijab and calling it an essential Islamic practice, while a piece of big news is coming out from the Islamic country of Afghanistan on the same issue. In fact, the Taliban's religious police have issued a strict decree regarding women working in Afghan government departments.

They have said that women should also be covered with blankets if needed, otherwise they may have to lose their jobs. Most women have been barred from their government jobs since the Taliban seized power in August, although Afghanistan's new rulers claim they will be allowed to return to jobs once certain conditions are imposed.

The Taliban ministry issued a statement on Tuesday saying women should not go to work unless they are properly covered and that if they do not follow the guidelines, they can be fired. Ministry spokesman Mohammad Sadiq Akif Muhajir told the media, "Women can do it the way they want to follow the hijab. When asked if this meant that women would have to wear a fully covered burqa, which the Taliban had made mandatory during their previous regime, the spokesman denied it.''
