Chennai: Seventy per cent of beds in Chennai have been filled due to rising corona cases,  in Tamil Nadu's health department. In Tamil Nadu, there have been 79,808 corona cases, while Chennai alone had only 28,005 cases till Tuesday evening. The management control room in government hospitals informed that 75 per cent of the beds were full by Tuesday evening. Five hospitals in Chennai have 4,368 beds including four government medical college hospitals and one covid hospital Gundy.

Patients with 50% oxygen requirement are admitted to medical college hospitals and those who need less than 50% oxygen are treated at health care centres. Out of 11,645 beds, 5,559 beds were full at 14 Coweed Care Centre on Tuesday. While 114 private hospitals in the city provide covid care services, 32 of which 100 per cent have reported bed full.

Dr Shanmughasunderam, a physician at a major hospital in Chennai, told the media, "The beds in Chennai are filling up fast and this is increasing the congestion in the hospitals. We have to open more covid care centres for care".
