CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu State Election Commission (TNSEC) has called off the urban local body elections scheduled for February 19 in Kadambur town panchayat in Thoothukudi district.

On February 19, a total of 21 municipal corporations, 138 municipalities, and 489 town panchayats will vote. The elections are being held after a ten-year hiatus, with the last polls taking place in 2011.

The TNSEC announced on Monday that the elections were cancelled because election officials failed to fulfil the Commission's standards for the first-grade town panchayat.

It further said that new dates will be announced later, and that the Thoothukudi district collector/district election officer had been ordered to suspend the concerned election officials.
