CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Monday with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the Chennai Port Trust, and the Indian Navy for the construction of a double-tiered elevated highway connecting the Chennai Port and Maduravoyal.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin at the state Secretariat. The projected 20.565 km elevated expressway would cost Rs 5,855 crore to construct. Local cars will travel between Chennai Port and Koyambedu in the first tier, while heavy vehicles would travel between Chennai Port and Maduravoyal in the second.
In 2009, then-Prime Minister Manmohan Singh laid the foundation stone for the project, which was estimated to cost Rs 1,655 crore.
The UPA government was in power at the time, and the DMK was a member of it. When the AIADMK, led by J. Jayalalithaa, took control in the state, the project was halted due to environmental concerns.
