CHENNAI:  The Greater Chennai police have rejected a request by deposed AIADMK coordinator O. Panneerselvam, who is struggling to retain his position in the party,  for police protection to enter the party headquarters in the city.
Leaders close to OPS requested the police protection.

Panneerselvamand his accomplices broke into the party headquarters on July 11 at the AIADMK general council meeting in Vanagaram, sparking violent fighting between the Panneerselvam and Palaniswami cadres.

Edappadi K. Palaniswami visited the AIADMK headquarters on Tuesday after the Madras High Court division bench restored his appointment as the interim general secretary of the party.

During the visit, a sizable police contingent was deployed.

The Panneerselvam faction declared that Panneerselvam will also travel to the party headquarters after Palaniswami's visit.

D. After Panneerselvam was dismissed from the party, Jayakumar, a former minister and close friend of EPS, petitioned the Chennai police to prevent him from entering the AIADMK headquarters. Panneerselvam has now been told by the municipal police not to go into the party offices right now because he might get hurt.

The police added that security could only be given once the state of law and order had been determined.

AIADMK coordinator O Panneerselvam earlire wrote to Avadi Commissioner of Police to reject permission for the party’s executive and general council meeting scheduled for June 23 on the outskirts of Chennai, citing the prevailing “unusual situation” and “law and order” issues. His position, however, further weakened, with a few more party district secretaries, who were loyal to him, switching support to the party co-coordinator Edappadi K Palaniswami, who is seeking to take full control of the AIADMK.
