Schools across Tamil Nadu will remain closed as the state braces for heavy rains, following forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The announcement of school closures spans 11 districts, including Chennai, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukkottai, Cuddalore, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, Thiruvarur, Ranipet, and Tiruvallur.
The collector of Tirunelveli declared a holiday for students from Classes 1 to 5 due to more-likely expected rainfall.Â
Thiruvalluvar University in Vellore has postponed its monthly examinations scheduled for November and December, citing weather-related disruptions.
Rainfall Data and Alerts
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for multiple districts in Tamil Nadu, warning of moderate rainfall accompanied by light thunderstorms. Light rain is predicted in districts like Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, and Teni.
Significant rainfall was recorded in some regions early Thursday. Karaikal received 8 cm of rain, while Adiramapattinam in Thanjavur and Vriddhachalam in Cuddalore each recorded 7 cm. Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur districts experienced consistent downpours, recording 6 cm of rainfall, while several parts of Chennai, notably Poonamallee and Red Hills, witnessed a similar volume of precipitation. These areas faced intermittent showers throughout the day, causing waterlogging in low-lying regions and prompting authorities to monitor the situation closely to ensure public safety.
Heavy morning showers in Thoothukudi prompted the district's Collector K. Elambahavath to declare a holiday for schools.
Northern India Prepares for Cold Wave
As Tamil Nadu deals with heavy rains, Northern India is bracing for a cold wave. According to the IMD, a western disturbance over central Pakistan and nearby regions is likely to cause light rainfall in Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi-NCR in the coming days.
The Metrological departement has also forecasted cold wave conditions across Northernverticals India starting December 9th. West-Rajasthan is anticipated to face a cold wave till 14th December, whereassimilar conditions are forecast for Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh, and West Uttar Pradesh from 11th December 11.

Authorities in Tamil Nadu have urged residents to stay cautious and minimize outdoor activities in affected areas. In Northern India, local administrations are preparing to manage the cold wave, ensuring residents are equipped to handle the sharp dip in temperatures.
