CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government will roll out a free breakfast scheme in 292 local panchayats across 15 districts' public schools.
The state administration has stated that all students in Classes 1 through 5 attending public schools will receive a free breakfast. This scheme is being implemented on an experimental basis. According to officials of the state education department, the project will be expanded to include all public schools in the state following its successful execution.
The initiative will launch in the month of July itself when preparations have started. The preparation of the breakfast will start at 5.30 in the morning and will conclude at 7.45 a.m. Breakfast will be available starting at 8.15 a.m. until 8.45 a.m, said the official of the state department of education.
The DMK government came up with the scheme after the state public health department found a significant number of malnourished children in the state, particularly in the BPL category.
According to a recent survey by the state's public health and school education departments, a sizable proportion of studens are sent to school just to take advantage of the lunches served there. Many students will benefit from the free breakfast programme, which will also aid in the development of their cognitive abilities.
