Dumka: As many as 33 government schools in the Dumka region of Jharkhand take their weekly day off on Friday instead of Sunday, ostensibly without permission from the authorities.

District education officials have requested a report on the situation, following which an investigation will be started, officials said. Dumka is the native town of chief minister Hemant Soren.

Fridays are vacations for ten government schools in Shikaripara Block of Dumka, eight in Ranishwar Block, seven in Saraiyahat Block, two in Jama Block and Jarmundi Block, and seven in Kathikund Block and Dumka Block. The majority of these institutions have name boards that also include the words "Urdu school" after the names of the schools.

"We have sent a letter to the 33 schools' Block education officers advising them to look into the situation", all the schools have Urdu in their names, Sanjay Kumar Das, Dumka's district superintendent of education said.

The official stated that the department has not given any orders for schools to be closed on Friday.
State Education Minister Jagarnath Mahto had earlier this week said that he had requested a report after learning that several schools in Jharkhand's Muslim-dominated districts were granting Friday leave instead of Sunday leave.

Mahto said that as soon as news came to light of the holidays being provided in schools, in violation of the government order he called for a meeting with District Education Officers and District Teacher Superintendents of the Jamtara district.
