Chennai: Vaccination of people in the age group of 18-44 years will start from May 20 (Thursday) in Tamil Nadu. State Health Minister M Subramanian said the age group will be vaccinated in a phased manner. "Initially those in the age period of 18-44 years will be vaccinated who are at a higher risk of spreading infection," he explained. The health minister said CM Mk Stalin will launch the vaccination programme.

M Subramanian said the state government has sanctioned Rs 46 crore for procurement of vaccine and 9 lakh doses have reached the state so far. After vaccination of people above 18 years of age started across the country on May 1, the state government had said that it could not start it due to lack of vaccine. According to data from the Union Health Ministry, only 38,710 people have been vaccinated so far in the 18-44 year age group in Tamil Nadu.

So far, 64,60,624 people (18-44 years) have been vaccinated under the third phase of vaccination campaign across the country. Due to vaccine shortage, tamil nadu government has floated a global tender for procurement of 3.5 crore doses. The government has set a time frame for delivery for 180 days after a purchase order of 3.5 crore doses. The last date for submission of tenderis is June 5.
