Chennai: Tamil Nadu Water Resources Minister S. Duraimurugan says that Tamil Nadu will not allow Karnataka to build a dam at Mekedatu, which is in the state of Tamil Nadu.

On Tuesday, a senior DMK leader said that if a dam was built at Mekedatu, the water from the Cauvery River would not flow to the state of Tamil Nadu because of it.

Because even if Karnataka spends more money on a dam, people in Tamil Nadu won't let it be built. The state would use every legal option it could to stop the dam from being built, he said.

Chennai: The Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) has made it clear that the upper riparian state can't be the only one who gets to use the water of a river that goes across several states. People should not build a dam at Mekedatu, Duraimurugan said. That's against the rulings of both the CWDT and the Supreme Court, he said.

The Union Environment Ministry said that it would not give the project the go-ahead without the permission of the state of Tamil Nadu.AIADMK leader and former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam urged M.K. Stalin to call a meeting of all the parties to talk about the issue at the same time.

He also asked the Chief Minister to call a meeting of the state legislature and pass a resolution asking the federal government not to let Karnataka build a dam at Mekedatu.
