MUMBAI: On World Health Day, the Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) in Mumbai signed a Partnership Agreement of Cancer Patient Navigation Program to promote cancer care in Indonesia. In a virtual event, Dharmais National Cancer Hospital and PT Roche Indonesia signed a Memorandum of Understanding.

'Patient Navigation' is a term used to describe the individualised assistance provided to patients, families, and caregivers in order to help them navigate the healthcare system.

According to TMC Director Rajendra Badwe, despite simple access to and high-quality cancer care, there is a problem with treatment adherence.

According to Badwe, who cited surveys undertaken by the TMC and the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), addressing a patient's economic, emotional, psychological, social, and cultural needs is critical for optimal treatment outcomes, and the 'Navigators' play this role.

In Indonesia, there is currently no such thing as a Cancer Patient Navigator (CPN), thus the MoU signed on Thursday is significant.

Manoj Kumar Bharti, India's ambassador to Indonesia, described the MoU as "extremely opportune" because Indonesia now holds the G20 presidency and "health" is one of the three primary pillars of the country's emphasis area.
