Hyderabad: The Telangana government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the December 6 encounter near Shadnagar town. In this encounter, the police killed four accused of gang-rape and murder with a woman doctor. This eight-member SIT will be led by Rachkonda Police Commissioner Mahesh M. Bhagwat. Other officers include officers from different parts of the state, including a woman.

The Government Order (GO) for the formation of SIT was issued late on Sunday night. Meanwhile, a team of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has started an investigation into the murder of the accused. The rapid killing of the accused was highly appreciated by the people. People were demanding immediate death penalty for the culprits, but the rights groups have strongly condemned the police taking the law into their own hands.

The GO states that the SIT has been formed as per the decision of the Supreme Court in the People's Union of Civil Liberties (PUCL) v. State of Maharashtra and others. The investigation of such cases will be entrusted to an independent investigation agency under the supervision of a senior officer of the police team of another police station.
