Ranchi: In Jamtara district of Jharkhand, a land dispute between Muslim and tribal communities has intensified, centered around a location known as 'Puratan Patit.' The tribal community claims the land as a sacred site, while the Muslim community asserts it is their graveyard. The situation escalated when a recent burial of a deceased Muslim individual on this land heightened tensions.
The disputed area, identified as Pavan Patit in the Narayanpur police station jurisdiction, became a flashpoint on August 24, 2024. Rahmatullah, a resident of Pithuadih village in Shaharpur Panchayat, passed away, and his funeral procession proceeded to Pavan Patit for the burial. When local tribal residents discovered the burial preparations, they objected, leading to increased tension.
The tribal community regards Pavan Patit as a sacred site, and their opposition to the burial led to a confrontation. The police were called to manage the situation and, after brief negotiations, sided with the Muslim community, allowing Rahmatullah to be buried on the disputed land.
Tribal leaders have accused the police of bias and claim that local administration is favoring the Muslim community. They argue that the police action was unjust and exacerbated the conflict. The heightened tension has led to increased police presence in the area.
Jharkhand BJP leader Babulal Marandi has criticized the state government, led by the JMM-Congress coalition, alleging that their policies are biased towards the Muslim community. Marandi termed the situation as 'land jihad' and suggested that the tribal community's grievances would be addressed in upcoming elections.
