Guwahati: Following the horrific rape of a minor girl in Dhing, Assam, allegedly by three youths from the Muslim community, tensions have escalated against Miya Muslims, a term referring to Muslims of Bangladeshi origin, as opposed to indigenous Muslims in Assam. The incident has intensified protests and fueled demands for Miya Muslims to leave Upper Assam.

In response, 30 organisations from Upper Assam have issued a seven-day ultimatum for Miya Muslims to vacate the region. These groups, including the Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad, claim that Miya Muslims are involved in various crimes and pose a threat to the region’s safety. They have stated that if their demand is not met, they will take measures to forcibly evict the community after the deadline.

The ultimatum was backed by several nationalist groups, such as the All Tai Ahom Students Union (ATASU), Asomiya Yuva Manch, and All Assam Adivasi Students’ Union, among others. These organisations have also called for the termination of Miya Muslim workers from businesses.

Congress MLA Abdur Rashid Mandal has stirred controversy by challenging the organisations' demands. Mandal condemned the Dhing rape but argued that the entire community should not be held accountable for the actions of a few individuals. He criticized the inflammatory remarks by some political figures, attributing them to the rise in such demands. Mandal emphasized that Miya Muslims contribute significantly to various sectors through their labor.
