Senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Thaawarchand Gehlot have been sworn in as the 19th Governor of Karnataka today i.e. In fact, he is replacing Vajubhai Rudabhai Wala. Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court Abhay Srinivas Oka today administered the oath of office and secrecy to Gehlot at Raj Bhavan in the presence of outgoing Governor Vala, Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa, his cabinet colleagues, MPs, MLAs, and senior state government officials. Thaawarchand Gehlot is 73 years old and was the Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment at the Centre.

At the same time, he was the Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha before assuming a new charge in the Southern State. Thaawarchand Gehlot was appointed governor of Karnataka on July 6 and was among the 12 Union ministers who resigned from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's council of ministers ahead of the Union Cabinet expansion on July 7. At the same time, he was the Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha since 2019. Thaawarchand Gehlot served as in-charge of BJP's Karnataka unit between 2006 and 2014 when he was general secretary of the party.
Thaawarchand Gehlot was a Lok Sabha MP from Shajapur (Madhya Pradesh) from 1996 to 2009 though he lost the 2009 Lok Sabha elections and was sent to the Rajya Sabha in 2012. Welcoming the appointment of Thaawarchand Gehlot as governor of Karnataka, Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa had said last Tuesday, "The state will benefit from his long experience in public life and commitment to social justice.'' In fact, Yediyurappa had tweeted and said, "I extend a warm welcome to Thaawarchand Gehlot as the new Governor of Karnataka. Gehlot Ji's long experience in public life and commitment to social justice will benefit the state.''
