Chennai: MK Stalin, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the relatives of those electrocuted during the chariot parade of Appar Swami Temple in Thanjavur district on Wednesday.

The Chief Minister's office stated, "Rs 5 lakh in compensation will be immediately provided to the families of victims (in the electrocution event) from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund." The incident claimed the lives of 11 persons, said the Chief Minister.

"Unexpectedly, eleven persons perished in an electrocution event this morning in Kalimedu village, Thanjavur district, during a chariot celebration. Hearing the dreadful news made me quite sad. My heartfelt condolences go out to the victims' families "CM Stalin said.

The Chief Minister further stated that the district administration and police have been directed to speed up the rescue operation.

Meanwhile, a FIR has been filed and an inquiry into the occurrence has begun. "Eleven persons have died in total. Three people died on the spot, while the other seven died later in the hospital. 15 persons have been hurt and are being treated at Thanjavur Medical College. An FIR has been lodged, and an investigation has begun into the case "Tiruchi Range Inspector General of Police V. Balakrishnan stated.
