New Delhi: An auto-rickshaw driver was run over by an unidentified vehicle while trying to escape from north Delhi's Civil Lines police station, police said on Sunday. According to police, the deceased has been identified as Rahul, a resident of the Majnu Ka Tila area. Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Sagar Singh Kalsi said a 40-year-old woman had come to the Civil Lines police station around 11:15 pm on Saturday. The woman alleged that she was ill-treated by an autorickshaw driver at the metro station.

Thereafter, constables Rakesh, Prem and Naresh accompanied the woman to the Assembly Metro station. The culprit was present there, the autorickshaw driver, who was in an inebriated state. The policemen asked the criminal to come with them to the police station. According to the report, after reaching the police station, when Rahul was parking his auto-rickshaw outside the gate, the complainant started getting aggressive. According to the DCP, the police explained to the woman. Meanwhile, Rahul escaped from the gate. Due to this, the criminal was hit by an unknown vehicle.  

Police said a case was registered under IPC sections 354 and 509 (word, gesture or intent to insult the modesty of a woman) on the woman's complaint. Deputy Commissioner of Police Sagar Singh said that another case has been registered against the driver of the unidentified vehicle that hit Rahul under IPC sections 279 (rash driving or riding in public) and 304A (causing death by negligence). Efforts are on to trace the driver, he said. DCP Kalsi said that as soon as the news of this incident was received, Rahul's family gathered in front of the police station and protested for 3-4 hours.
