Begusarai: A 72-year-old farmer from Bihar underwent surgery at a private hospital here to remove a tumour from his thyroid gland. After the surgery, doctors said there were several challenges, including saving the patient's voice, in removing the 'coconut-shaped' tumour. In a statement, the hospital said that the patient, a resident of the Begusarai district, was having difficulty breathing and swallowing food for the last six months. He was brought to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital here last month for the ENT department and head, Neck Onco Surgery.

Dr Sangeet Agarwal, consultant of head and neck Onco surgery at the hospital, said, "Due to the practice of the last so many years, I have operated on more than 250 such large thyroid tumour cases, but this was a unique case in terms of weight and size. The normal butterfly-shaped thyroid gland, which normally weighs 10-15 grams and is 3-4 centimetres in size, was found to be like a coconut of 18-20 centimetres in this case.''

He said that the biggest challenge was to save the patient's voice while removing the tumour. He said the bilateral vocal cord nerves could barely be saved. The doctor said that the patient's windpipe had narrowed, due to which a special technique had to be applied for anaesthesia. The surgery took about 3 hours. The thyroid gland is on the front of the throat, also known as Adam's Apple.
