Benedict Cumberbatch, an English actor, is scheduled to feature in HBO's upcoming limited series 'Londongrad.' The series is based on Alan Cowell's book "The Terminal Spy," which depicts the true narrative of Alexander Litvinenko, a KGB spy and subsequent defector who was poisoned with the radioactive isotope polonium-210 in England in 2006.

According to sources, Cumberbatch would play Litvinenko and will also act as an executive producer on the film under his Sunnymarch label. 'Londongrad' is written by David Scarpa, who will also executive produce. Orwell Productions will direct and executive produce Bryan Fogel's film.

Crash&Salvage's Len Amato will executive produce with Sunnymarch's Adam Ackland and Claire Marshall. Throughout his career, Cumberbatch has played a number of well-received television roles. He is most known for his role as Sherlock Holmes in the television series 'Sherlock,' for which he received many Emmy and BAFTA nominations.

He has recently appeared in the limited series 'Patrick Melrose,' which is based on Edward St Aubyn's semi-autobiographical novels. Cumberbatch is most renowned for his cinematic work, having been nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in the thriller 'The Imitation Game.' He has also starred in films like 'Atonement', '1917', '12 Years a Slave', 'Star Trek Into Darkness', and two of 'The Hobbit' films.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he presently plays Dr. Strange. This isn't the first time a project has been announced to take on the Litvinenko. David Tennant had previously stated in September that he has signed on to feature in the ITV thriller 'Litvinenko.'
