New Delhi: The financial bid for Air India is likely to be announced today. Several media reports claim that Tata Sons' bid has been given the green signal. According to media reports, Tata Group Chairman Emeritus Ratan Tata and Tata Sons Chief N Chandrasekaran will meet Home Minister Amit Shah and discuss Air India.

On the other hand, Montek Singh Ahluwalia, who was currently vice-chairman of the erstwhile Planning Commission (now NITI Aayog), said on Thursday that no other corporate house in the country is in a better situation than Tata Group for the acquisition of debt-ridden airline Air India. Tata Sons have also emerged as the top bidder for the acquisition of the government-run airline, but the bid is yet to be approved by a group of ministers led by Home Minister Amit Shah. Replying to a question at an online event, Ahluwalia said, 'You may not have a corporate with a better position than Tata, we can hand over Air India to Tata.'

Jahangir Ratanji Dadabhai (JRD) Tata founded the airline in 1932 when it was known as Tata Airlines. The international service was one of the first public-private partnerships in India, with 49 per cent of the government, 25 per cent of Tata and the rest of the public. Air India was nationalized in 1953. The government is trying to sell its 100 per cent stake in the national airline.
